It's always dangerous to smash them false idols, and I suspect somebody got in trouble for revealing that Oz was just a man behind a curtain. Steigerwald has done literary history a favor; I love his writing, and I am (gasp) essentially a Joe Biden Democrat, or just a bit to the left of him. Anyone ever notice how many great writers are a bit snarky, from Swift to PJJ O'Rourke? I'd like to see Bill do a book on the fact that America has evidently become unable to laugh at itself, and what that means.
