April Fooling in the PG -- The annual replay
Keeping with an April 1 tradition, here's the mock front page of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette from 1998 that shows that even when newspapers mattered they could have fun.
April Fooling.
Back in 1998, when I was working in what I didn't realize was going to be the last Golden Age of Newspapers, I somehow persuaded my bosses at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette to let me produce a full-page mock-up/parody of our front page in honor of April Fools Day.
I had lots of help from our talented crew of writers who long ago have moved on to PR land or retirement.
Astoundingly, considering the tiny physical size of the PG today, the page of very fake news appeared on Page 54 of a 162-page Wednesday paper.
I'm still waiting for my Pulitzer.
